What is DAB+ digital radio?

DAB+ technology will soon be available – if it isn’t already – on your car radio. But how does this technology work? And what are the benefits? AMS has the answers.

DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is a broadcast technology delivered via satellite or terrestrial air waves. DAB+ has taken over from FM radio, replacing analogue technology with digital in the same way as DTT in television.

Since 2007, it has been gradually deployed throughout Europe. It has already been adopted in the UK, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and Switzerland. France, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria are currently implementing it. Given its importance, the European Union has decided that all car radios in new cars that are sold or rented must be compatible with DAB+ technology by the end of 2020. However, there is no law yet in place that applies to agricultural vehicles.

The arrival of digital radio has many benefits, including:

  • Better sound quality
  • Better signal quality to ensure listening continuity while you are on the move
  • New radio stations available
  • Simplified search by name instead of frequency
  • An enhanced audio stream with digital information offering more details about what you are listening to

Your audio equipment must be compatible in order to receive DAB+. DAB+ radios can still pick up the FM signal, but not the other way around. At AMS, our range features two radios equipped with DAB+, including a shortwave radio (CT412 DAB BT) and a radio CD player (CB 710 DAB BT).
